Instável’s Production Course

Instável’s Production Course is an irreverent program, which combines essential and unavoidable subjects and trainers, with a modular approach and a strong practical component. It is not intended to provide working models, but rather to provoke thought, stimulate synergies, and encourage interactions.

Program and modules

It is aimed at creators, producers and other workers in the cultural sector who want to deepen their knowledge in the area of cultural production.

This course covers the modules of Production, Production in a host context, Better practices in cultural production, Financial management, European financing, Cultural communication, Law in culture, Introduction to sound, Introduction to light, Stage management, Applications and Project.

The syllabus of each module can be consulted in this manual.

Participation in the course offers trainees tools for integration into a professional context. Over the course of four months, participants have the opportunity to plan and implement management, production, communication and financing strategies within the scope of the Performing Arts, particularly in the areas of theater and dance. At the end of the course, students can be offered internships in partner structures.

Schedule

Tuesday to Thursday from 6:30 PM às 10:30 PM

Students may also attend PULSO‘s Monday sessions, from 10 AM to 12 PM. This is completely optional.

 

Application

In 2024, the course will take place between April 1st and July 22nd, for a total of four months.

Amarílis Felizes

Financial management

Currently a student of the Interdisciplinary Doctorate in Political Economy (ISCTE, FEUC and ISEG), Amarílis Felizes is developing a thesis on Cultural Policies in Portugal, with FCT funding. She completed a master’s degree in Economics and Public Policies at ISEG, with the dissertation “Cultural Policy in Portugal – Determinants of public expenditure on culture” and has a degree in Economics from FEP and in Theater from ESMAE. She has worked in production and management, stage assistance, stage direction and assembly and operation of shows, in companies such as Mundo Perfeito or Visões Úteis and in specific projects and tours. Since 2020, she has been a leader of Plateia – Association of Performing Arts Professionals, participating in various discussion forums on cultural policies. She staged five speculums with youth groups as part of the PANOS project, of which she is currently a member of the jury. She is co-author of a chapter of “The Routledge Companion to Theater of the Oppressed” (2019) and has developed ongoing activity related to this method.

Ana Figueira

Production, Applications and Project

She has a degree in Dance from FMH. As an ERASMUS fellow, she attended the Laban Center in London. Master in Artistic Performance and postgraduate degree in Arts Management. She founded and directed NEC for 12 years, and was programmer and artistic director of Teatro Aveirense. She also programmed and directed the Invicta Cidade que Dança (Porto), and Arte e Novas Tecnologias (Aveiro) festivals, and created and directed the Educação pela Arte / Fundação Narciso Ferreira project for 22 years. She was a guest professor for 12 years at ESE-IPP. Since 2002, she has been a guest professor of Cultural Marketing and Promotion and Production at ESMAE, and, since 1992, a professor at Ginasiano Escola de Dança. She is frequently invited as a jury for various projects, notably the PT program – Plataforma Portuguesa de Artes Performativas, Criatório, and Prémios SPA 2023. She has played an important role in encouraging young creators. The work she has developed, both with creators and as a programmer, gives her an ambivalent understanding, not only from the perspective of supply but also from the perspective of demand, as well as knowledge of future generations of creators and performers.

Catarina Serrazina

Better practices in cultural production

She has worked in the Portuguese cultural sector since 2013. Over the years, she has had the opportunity to collaborate and learn from diverse structures and projects, in various parts of the country, namely Associação PédeXumbo (2013-2016). She is interested in collaborative projects that provoke astonishment and propose more conscious and responsible practices. Her academic qualifications include a degree in Communication and Multimedia (UA, 2008), a master’s degree in Cultural Practices for Municipalities (UNL-FCSH, 2013) and a postgraduate degree in Human Ecology (UNL-FCSH, 2018). She began her collaboration with Instável in October 2018, dedicating herself to the areas of seeking and raising support and project management and production. Between September 2020 and June 2021 she managed the Coriolis project – Movement for Sustainability, which aimed to improve internal procedures at Instável while promoting broad improvement in a group of Performing Arts organizations in the North Region.

Francisco Cipriano

European Financing

He has a master’s degree in Geography and Regional and Local Planning. His professional life is linked to the management of community funds in Portugal and international cooperation projects, in the Portuguese Public Administration, the European Commission and, currently, the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. He is also the driving force behind the Application Laboratory project, European Funds for Art, Culture and Creativity, a space for ideas and people to converge around the main European funding initiatives for the cultural sector. Furthermore, he considers himself a man of many activities. Advertising, writing, photography, travel. Passionate about surfing, he sees waves as his form of liberation and a unique moment of harmony between man and nature.

João Fontes

Introduction to light

João Fontes graduated from IPP-ESMAE in 2002 and received the title of Specialist in Performing Arts in 2015. He began his professional career in 1999, having been involved in several creative artistic movements and processes. He has worked as a Light Designer and Technical Director since 2002, and between 2007 and 2010 he won two prestigious awards: the 2008 Golden Globe for “Best Theater Show” SIC/Caras and in 2007 the “Best Light Design” Theater Award/Guia of Theatres. In the period between 2010 and 2013 he served as Production Director and Technical Director at the Rivoli Teatro Municipal, and in 2013 he became Executive Director of the Teatro Municipal do Porto, in the capacity of Chief of Staff of the Theaters of the Municipality of Porto, a position he held until December 2015. Over the last 24 years, he has built a pedagogically diverse career, combined with an uninterrupted professional career in the performing arts, both in the artistic component as Light Designer, and in prominent positions as designer of scenic spaces, director technician, production director and senior employee with the role of Administrator in the two municipal theaters in the Municipality of Porto. Currently, alongside his pedagogical duties at ESMAE and his career as a Senior Technician at the Municipal Directorate of Education of the Porto City Council, he continues to work as a technical consultant in the design of scenic spaces and in the continuous development of his creative work as a Light Designer in several artistic projects.

Mafalda Sebastião

Law in culture

Graduated in Law, postgraduate in Labor Law and Cultural Heritage Law, and Master in Intellectual Law from the Faculty of Law of the University of Lisbon. She is the Coordinator of the Gaivotas Cultural Center | Boavista – Loja Lisboa Cultura, from the Lisbon City Council, since its opening in 2016. She was a Producer at the São Luiz Teatro Municipal, from 2007 to 2016, and a lawyer at EGEAC – Equipment Management and Cultural Entertainment Company, EM, between 2003 and 2006. Since 2002, she has worked as a lawyer in the areas of Labor Law and Cultural Law, including Intellectual Property. she prepared the following academic research works: “On Employment Contracts with Special Regime – The Artistic Employment Contract” (2000), “Notorious Brand and Prestige Brand”, “The Producer’s Law”, “Labor Regime for Entertainment Professionals ” (2010) and “The Law of the Show Producer”.

Rita Tomás

Cultural communication

Rita Tomás is Communications Director at TBA, a Lisbon theater dedicated to experimental performing arts. Before that, she worked at the Belém Cultural Center and was part of the Maria Matos Teatro Municipal team for almost ten years. With a degree in Cultural Sciences from the Faculty of Arts, she completed a postgraduate degree in Book Publishing and Digital Formats at UCP and was also a Gulbenkian fellow for her master’s degree in Arts Administration and Cultural Policy at Goldsmiths, in London. She has taught Cultural Communication courses at universities, with Acesso Cultura and with Forum Dança.

Samuel Guimarães

Maps and Place Workshop and Collaborative Processes Workshop

Part-time professor at ESMAE.IPP, since 1993, and part-time Guest Assistant Professor at FBAUP since 2021. Education coordinator at the Douro Museum – the territory’s museum, from 2006 to September 2022, developing projects involving schools, groups of educators, philharmonic bands, amateur theater groups and other informal collectives at the interface between artistic education and performing arts. As part of the eusoupaisagem education program, highlights the bios projects Fronteira, Segredos, Cartas da Liberdade or Café Central and Instalar Leituras. He designed the education program and was coordinator of the educational service at the Serralves Museum and Park (from 1999 to 2002), during these years he led intensive seminars at the Institute of European Studies in Macau, China. Since October 2022, he has been an assistant researcher at i2ADS – FBAUP with the project How to practice files? to create an archive of non-discriminatory practices in artistic education. He has collaborated with i2ads since 2011, and belongs to the LABEA team – Laboratory for Research in Artistic Education, I2ads (since 2017). Public in the field of artistic education and critical mediation as regularly as possible, questioning its colonial ontologies. He has a degree in Art History (1992), a Master’s degree in Art History (1998) from FLUP (Porto’s Faculty of Arts). PhD in Artistic Education (2016) from FBAUP. He also took the Culturgest cultural programming course in 1998.

Tiago Ralha

Introduction to light

He has a degree in Music, with a variant in Production and Music Technologies, from the Escola Superior de Música, Artes e Espetáculo. He collaborated on academic projects developed by IPP Audio Services and the Musical Acoustics Laboratory. He took advantage of an academic training scholarship where he performed tasks as a sound technician at the Teatro Helena Sá e Costa, over the course of a year. He attended the Master’s degree in Theater, specializing in Sound Design, at ESMAE. He recorded and mixed the Orquestra Clássica do Centro, the Orquestra XXI, the Ensemble ID, the Orfeão de Águeda and the Ensemble de Percussão Etnica. He was involved, as a show audio operator and sound designer in projects for theater companies such as Radar360, Turma, Pele, Ao Cabo Teatro, Palmilha Dentada, among others, having worked with directors such as António Oliveira, Julieta Rodrigues, Tiago Correia, António Durães, Nuno Cardoso, John Romão, Ricardo Alves, Hugo Cruz, João Pedro Correia, Susana Oliveira, João Didelet, João Sousa e Costa, Albano Jerónimo, among others. As a live and studio sound technician, he accompanied projects such as O Grilo e a Longifolia, Sopa de Pedra, Baleia Baleia Baleia, Les Saint Armand, Tangente, André Júlio Turquesa, Aníbal Zola and others. He was an audio technician at Teatro Municipal do Porto – Rivoli and Campo Alegre, occupying operational and coordination roles in the audio team for 5 years, from 2017 to 2023. Currently, in addition to working as a sound designer and sound technician, he is a trainer at audio area and manager of educational programs, particularly music for children.

Tânia Rodrigues

Production in a host context and Stage Management

Tânia Rodrigues was born in Porto in 1982 and has been a Cultural Producer since 2016. Her training was at BALLETEATRO Escola Profissional where she finished her secondary studies in dance, attended the Choreographic Research and Creation Course as a performer at Fórum Dança – Associação Cultural and performed functions as founder and choreographer of Acro Clube da Maia. Graduated in Theatre-Cultural Production, from the Escola Superior de Música e Artes do Espetáculo (ESMAE), since 2006 she has collaborated as a Stage Director with several institutions, such as Teatro Helena Sá e Costa, GINASIANO Escola de Dança, Academia de Dança da Boavista , Porto Coliseum. She is currently a collaborator at ÁGORA – Cultura e Desporto EM, Department of Performing Arts and is part of the Production team at Teatro Municipal do Porto. She has the privilege of working with artists and companies from all over the world and implementing bold and inclusive programming! She was a guest lecturer from 2012 to 2023 where she taught several Curricular Units in the Theater Area at ESMAE.
