“Dostoyevsky Made Me Do It”, by João Oliveira / LAB Aveiro / Palcos Instáveis Segunda Casa
Inspired by Notes from Underground by Fyodor Dostoyevsky, we witness a more physical adaptation of this intense man. Unable to cope with the reality around him, he self-isolates, reflecting on the world that surrounds him, which he refuses to face out of contempt and intolerance. This time, he invites the audience into his underground space, allowing the transformation of his endless monologue into a far more fleeting dialogue.
João Oliveira began his artistic journey at Balleteatro, where he studied Theater, continuing to earn a bachelor’s degree in Dance from Bath Spa University in England, and in 2021, he completed the Management and Production course at Forum Dança. As a creator, he is the author of the pieces Antes que Mude de Ideias (2017), Dostoevsky Made Me Do It (2020), and Dois Peixes em Marte (2021). He has taught and choreographed students at the Performact school and is currently a teacher involved in the CriArte project at Balleteatro. As a performer, he has collaborated with various directors and choreographers, including Carlos Costa, Né Barros, Willi Dorner, and Sofia Dias & Vítor Roriz.
The second edition of the Aveiro Choreographic Creation Laboratory culminated in April 2022 with the presentation of the works developed by the participants throughout the project. Caem Calhaus do Céu by João Oliveira was the piece selected by the jury to be part of the “Palcos Instáveis Segunda Casa” performance cycle at Teatro Aveirense.
The Choreographic Creation Laboratory is a project aimed at young creators, seeking to encourage and support the development of contemporary dance projects, based on an individual proposal for a new creation.
