© Pedro Sardinha/TMP / “Lowlands”, by Helder Seabra, interpreted by Afonso Cunha, Dinis Duarte, Joana Couto, Mário Araújo, Lea Siebrecht, Pedro Matias and Sara Santervás
An area where the land is close to or below sea level is called a plain — lowlands. Lowlands also refers to Freud’s theory, which compares the mind to an iceberg—floating with only one-seventh of its volume above water, the only visible part.
In this piece for eight performers, the creator dives below sea level, into the “unconscious mind,” guiding the artists and audience through the “mental waiting room,” where thoughts remain until they manage to attract the gaze of consciousness. Primitive instincts resurface—desires, fears, urges, beliefs, anxieties, among others—along with impulses kept at a distance, undisguised by the mannerisms of adult etiquette. The physicality connected to the unconscious becomes the main character; the body, its resource.
In an encounter between people in an “empty space,” the search for a common essence may enable a deeper vision of our daily lives and our personal and collective identity.
Through a highly physical and experimental dance and theater aesthetic, Lowlands explores the shadow world of existence, internal stories unfolding beyond language and words. – Helder Seabra
Helder Seabra is a prolific creator, performer, and educator currently based in Belgium. He began his training at Ginasiano and at P.A.R.T.S., the school of Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, in Brussels. In parallel, he performed with Companhia Instável in creations by Ronit Ziv, Javier Frutos, and in 2004 with Wim Vandekeybus/Ultima Vez for the restaging of Les Porteuses de Mauvaises Nouvelles, a co-production with Instável. Since then, he has worked as a performer and assistant for Wim Vandekeybus, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Damien Jalet, and other internationally renowned choreographers in critically acclaimed projects. In 2013, he founded Incognitus vzw, a structure through which he has been developing his own artistic path in collaboration with other artists. With a style that is highly dynamic and articulated – both raw and refined – Helder Seabra presents a unique artistic language, deeply rooted in physicality.
